Take in some stunning birdlife, hay meadows rich in wild flowers in the beautiful setting around the Blackton Reservoir.  This walking guide prepared by the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty details that bird populations that you can expect to encounter at the different seasons of the year.  This is classed as a medium grade walk with some rough ground and stiles along the way.

The route takes you past Low Birk Hat, the site of Hannah Hauxwell's farm and traditional hay meadows.  Hannah rose to fame in the 1970's as the star of several documentaries detailing the hardships she faced as a lone women farmer in the high Pennine dales.  The Durham Wildlife Trust maintain this site and there are several interesting interpretation panels with wildlife and farming facts.
