Kings Head Blue PlaqueWhilst browsing round the excellent shops, tearooms and cafes in Barnard Castle why not take in the Blue Plaque Trail.  The trail will take you round some hidden nooks and crannies in the town and provides a wealth of interesting information about the history and heritage of the town.

See the building, that used to be a coaching Inn, where Charles Dickens stayed whilst researching facts about the Yorkshire boarding schools for his novel Nicholas Nickleby.  Marvel at Blagraves restaurant on the bank, an amazing building with intricate stone sculptures where Oliver Cromwell was hosted for the night.
