Egglestone Abbey

The site at Egglestone Abbey is managed by English Heritage and has no admission charge.

The Abbey is accessed by a narrow track alongside the river Tees, with free car parking and free access to the site it is a delightful place to explore and contemplate the life of the monks in days gone by.  The information boards around the site help to put life and workings of the Abbey into context, you can wander around and enjoy the stunning views over the river and of the ruined buildings.

With wide grassy areas, interesting stone walls and the remains of the Abbey ruins to explore, Egglestone Abbey makes a perfect trip out for families with children.   With plenty of perfect spots for picnics and games of hide and seek everyone can enjoy exploring the historical ruin.

The Abbey can be accessed by easy circular walks from Barnard Castle town centre.  There is also a footpath that starts at the Abbey bridge and takes you downstream on a delightful route to the meeting of the waters of the rivers Greta and Tees.
